Michael Pollan is even better in person! Went to his lecture with mom, dad and Tiffany as part of the Portland Literary Arts series; the place was sold out! I haven't read his latest book, In Defense of Food, but Omnivore's Dilemma is very interesting. You read that one, didn't you, Heidi? I remember a discussion about Polyface Farms in Virginia.
In any case, some of his "rules for eating":
1) Eat as much junk food as you want...as long as you've made it yourself.
2) Only buy food your great-grandmother would recognize.
3) Shop on the perimeter of the grocer store. Typically that's where all the refrigerator units are, to store perishable (and highly nutritious!) items.
4) Don't eat alone, in front of the TV, at your desk, etc. Eating should be a communal/family experience.
5) Don't buy anything that includes ingredients a fifth grader couldn't pronounce.
It was so cool...Mr. Pollan even answered a question mom submitted from the audience--what is your response to climate change? His reply: grow a victory garden! Learn how to depend on yourself for sustenance!
And now, I am happy to report, I have a new partner in my "one new thing a week" quest. My friend Tiffany is up for the challenge!
